Our Expedition

Home About us Our Expedition Fundraising Follow us Travel Advice

We are spending around three months in our specially prepared Land Rover driving from the UK to Mongolia, touring around there and driving back to the UK.

Kevin and Richard will leave the UK around 19th June, and after driving through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and (for a very long way!) Russia, we hope to arrive in Mongolia after about three weeks.  We will cover over 6,000 miles before we reach Mongolia.

We then hope to tour Mongolia for a little over a month, visiting

the capital Ulaan Baatar (including the Children's Charity there which we are supporting)
the birthplace of Genghis Khan
the Gobi Desert
the fabulous Hovsgol Nur (a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains in the northwest of Mongolia)

and many other fantastic places.  For part of this time, Geraldine will be with us.

Mongolia is a country the size of Western Europe, but with a population of only 2.7 million people - so there should be plenty of space for us!

Kevin and Richard will then drive back to the UK through Russia and Northern Europe, arriving in good time for Richard to prepare for his university term at the beginning of October.

Why are we doing this expedition?

For Kevin as for many people, Mongolia has always been tucked away in the imagination as the archetypal wild and desolate place.  He has had an urge to visit it for some time, and to see the "real" Mongolia, not just the capital and the touristy bits.  The wide open plains, the huge mountain ranges, the massive lakes, all without fences, and the traditional nomadic lifestyle all exert a strong pull on the imagination.  Also, it's not a bad therapy after 25 years of office life!

Richard has also caught the bug for visiting wild places after his school expedition to Tibet and Everest base camp in his lower sixth year.  He also did the classic Interail trip around Europe with a couple of school friends after his A levels.

So we're doing it for the adventure.  But we are also hoping to raise funds while we do it for two very worthwhile children's charities who really need the help - one in the UK and one in Mongolia.  See the Fundraising pages for details.
